1927 IMPROVEMENT WORK IS UNDER WAY
|
 |
The keynote of Denver
and Rio Grande Western policy and practice continues to be epitomized
in one word IMPROVEMENT |
RECTIFICATION
OF GRADE AND ALIGNMENT: Elimination of sharp curves will cover
91 miles this year, chiefly in the Grand Caņon of the Arkansas from
the Royal Gorge to Buena Vista; through the-Eagle River Caņon, the
Caņon of the Colorado, in Ruby Caņon and near Husted, Colorado.
INSTALLATION OF AUTOMATIC BLOCK SIGNALS: This will be completed
in early summer on 135 miles between Minturn and Palisade on the
western slope of the Continental Divide, and through the Colorado
River Caņon.
NEW EQUIPMENT: Ten new Mallet locomotives, each weighing
974,000 pounds, with a tractive power of 125,000 pounds, will be
delivered before midsummer. Four all-steel dining cars of latest
design are to go in service in May and. June. Three hundred fifty-foot,
fifty-ton automobile cars are being built for June and July delivery.
HEAVIER RAIL: Laying of 130 miles new rail is a major item
in the program. |
| An ideal
of maximum service consistent with the needs of the territory is
being aimed at through the practical medium of improved physical
condition. By the end of 1927, forty-two millions will have been
spent in a seven-year period in the attainment of physical perfection
of roadbed, trackage and equipment. The current year sees an acceleration
of this process of improvement and betterment. Eight millions will
be spent in a program which includes these principal items: |
| BALLASTING: By the end of the
season, the entire main line of 782 miles, Denver to Ogden, will
be ballasted to high standard, except eleven miles where line changes
are later to be made. |
STEEL AND CONCRETE BRIDGES:
Construction of steel and concrete bridges of approved standard
and permanent character is keeping pace with other improvements.
