Rio Grande Zephyr - 1970 - 1983

While the cars used for the Rio Grande Zephyr were the same as those used in the California Zephyr (with the addition of the 1230 & 1231 combines & 1116 diner listed below), some changes occurred. These changes didn't happen all at once, or right away. The most noticeable change was that the train board that used to read "CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR" was removed on each car. The board was not replaced, nor was the board left and the lettering replaced with the railroad name. Broadway Limited is rumored to be producing this version of the California Zephyr cars at some point in 2007 (they would also be usable for Amtrak, Autotrain and other post CZ and RGZ uses).

Other changes included modifications to or removal of the rear lights on SILVER SKY, removal of the bedroom accommodations from SILVER SKY, modifications to the interior upholstery in the domes, and other interior modifications. An ex-Union Pacific diner was purchased from a third party in 1979 (numbered 1116) to allow for longer maintenance windows on SILVER BANQUET.

(*note - the last column, which contains modeling suggestions for HO contains only the Broadway Limited cars due to space limitations. Other cars made by Oriental Limited and Shoreham Shops are also well done, and while not currently in production can be frequently found at used brass dealers. Kato offers N scale cars, though not all of the D&RGW cars are listed.)
